The line between Kingham and Moreton In Marsh has the above bridge over it. The bridge isn't in a great state of repair on one side and is in need of repair. Network Rail decided to replace rather than repair it. Construction firm Graham have been appointed and have started work. They've closed the road either side of it and brought in sections that will eventually become a bridge. The bad news is that apparently they will be taking three 30hr possessions of the line to do this.

The work is expected to take until the end of May. So if using the line it would be as well to check your journey carefully for closures/over runs.

That might not be so bad - after all, a "30 hour possession" is a whole Sunday. But those Sundays are imminent: February 14/21/18. The road closure notice runs to 25th May, but there's no further possessions booked. So, provided nobody drops anything big and heavy ...

There are some very large bridge pieces and other construction pieces in the field next to the bridge. There's also a small army in that field ready to do battle. Hopefully the recent lovely weather hasn't delayed anything.

I normaly take a weekley walk that goes past the end of George lane in Wyre. Next time I am out that way I will go and have a look. It is not possible for the next couple of days due to flooding.

Opinions differ.  An alternative derivation is 'Moreton in March', with 'march' being an old English word for boundary. It derives from the town being on what was a rather patchy border between counties.

'Moreton Henmarsh' is the origin I've heard, though whether that implies a marsh or something else ('why did the hen march' could be the origin of 'why did the chicken cross the road'  ) I do not know.

Moreton is derived from Old English which means "Farmstead on the Moor" and "in Marsh" is from henne and mersh meaning a marsh used by birds such as moorhens. An alternative suggestion is that 'Marsh' is a corruption of 'March', early English for boundary.

Stocks Overbridge is on the minor road from Evenlode to Broadwell, shown in the centre of this map extract it is almost in the river Evenlode. During wet weather the surrounding fields are frequently under water.

Yes it was here that the line used to seriously  flood before the track was raised and culverts put in underneath

As a result of pre-planned maintenance work on the line between Oxford and Moreton-in-Marsh train services will not operate over that route today.

The road transport, which was advertised to operate in place of the train services, will continue to run as scheduled but at Charlbury these vehicles will call at the bus stops in Nine Acres Lane, near the junction with Thames Street, in Charlbury Village and will not serve the railway station. These arrangements were previously advertised elsewhere on our website since 2nd February 2021.

However, owing to this departure / pick-up point being included in the schedules as 'Charlbury Village' electronic information systems do not hold timings for such a location.

For journeys towards Moreton-in-Marsh and Worcester the road transport will depart Charlbury Village at 09:35 / 10:33 / 12:33 / 13:28 / 14:33 / 15:28 / 16:33 / 17:23 / 18:23 / 19:23 / 20:33 / 21:40 / 22:40 / 23:32.

For journeys towards Oxford the road transport will depart Charlbury Village at 08:45 / 09:30 / 10:55 & at 55 minutes past each hour until 20:55 / 21:51 / 22:26.
