I read somewhere many years ago that the station at Woolhampton was named Midgham precisely to avoid such confusion

Exactly.    No limit of "one in the first 24 hours" here, Lee, if you can spot any of the other anagram pairs - but this is a really difficult one!

Welling to Welwyn Garden City, both Welling/Welwyn pronouced identically. I lived at Welling in the past and know the confusion it caused.
