Ilfracombe?
Yes, it IS Ilfracombe. Sadly, I never got to the town while it still had a railway; I have been there very briefly - day trip on a holiday, driving from Minehead. The Station was said to be "way above the town" and this arial picture shows not really that, but just how far it was from the sea front. From a purely emotional viewpoint, Ilfracombe, Minehead and Kingswear are three of the saddest losses from the days of my youth. I visited the latter two whilst still running under BR▸ but my leisure stays didn't continue once the daily services from early morning into the evening ceased. It was a loss of business to the towns which individually they won't have noticed, but with people no longer able to travel to/from all day / every day except by bus it must have hit them. Where tracks are still in place, I dream (but perhaps it's just a dream) of appropriate passenger services for regular users and the overall good of the area served. |

Looking at the picture carefully, the huge embankment immediately to the west of the carriage sidings is visible, but the picture doesn't give the impression of height. |

Yes it was the trees that first suggested Westbury - then that fence at the end of the platform. |
