From Wales Online

Quote
How you can travel for free on these train routes in Wales until March

There are some routes where you can only travel through certain months of the year.

If you're a user of the concessionary bus pass scheme around Wales then you're in luck.

That's because there are many routes where you can travel for free.

To clarify - it's free at the point of travel.  I'm sure the TOC (Train Operating Company) doesn't provide the service for nothing, being paid for journeys or getting an increased subsidy for running the trains from the taxpayer.  In my view, though, a sensible provision where (in essence) the train is the "local bus".

October to March:
Pwhelli to Macynlleth (not on school time journeys when trains busy to / from Harlech and Tywyn)
Knighton to Llanelli (and journeys from that section onwards to Swansea and Shrewsbury)

All year:
Wrexham General to Hawarden Bridge (noting Wrexham Central is NOT listed!)
Blaenau Ffestiniog to Llandudno (appears to include all trains Llandudno - Llandudno Junction)

Remember that the English senior bus passes are not valid in Wales.

In the interest of clarity, neither are the Welsh ones valid in England

Neither of the last two comments are quite right. English cards can be used on Severn Express now operated by Stagecoach as far as Chepstow and Newport. And a Stagecoach dayrider can be purchased in South Wales with an ENCTS (English National Concessionary Travel Scheme. Bus passes for senior/disabled persons) card. Conversely it would seem that Welsh passes can be used as far as Bristol. Some other counties either side of the border have their own cross order agreements eg Shrewsbury. On the first day of English bus passes in 2008 I had a day out in Cwmbran(of all places) using my disabled ENCTS card, just because I could !

It’s valid where you board. So an English card should only be valid Bristol to Newport but not the return journey. Vice versa for welsh cards.

Likewise where restrictions apply/ don’t apply the restrictions for the location you board apply. For example Cornwall council have removed time restrictions, so you can travel Saltash to Plymouth 24/7 but Plymouth to Saltash can only be done between 0930-2300

I have done the return journey from Chepstow and Newport with my ENCTS (English National Concessionary Travel Scheme. Bus passes for senior/disabled persons) card, many times with no questions asked.
