The railway station near Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium is to be renamed after the club lobbied the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, and his transport office, who had insisted that the club should pay more than £14.7m for the privilege.

The north London Premier League club first approached Transport for London (TfL) more than two years ago wanting to change the name of White Hart Lane station to Tottenham Hotspur.

A memo of understanding between the club and TfL, controlled by Khan, is now being drafted but Spurs won’t have to meet the multimillion pound asking price which it has vigorously contested.

There already is an Arsenal station, renamed for the club way back in the 1930s, and I believe something similar with Manchester Untied. Station names should be a useful indication to travellers of where the station is, which doesn't have to be geographical. They should also be reasonably distinct; I'm not sure of the risk of confusion between Tottenham Hotspur and Tottenham Hale vs Arsenal and Woolwich Arsenal?

But there are questions around the "corporatisation" of supposedly public space, especially as in this case there's some unclarity whether the club have actually paid what was agreed.

As an aside, Hotspur has to be the best name in English football.

The best name in English football is of course (Plymouth) Argyle!

We've seen this already with Bicester Town being renamed to be that of a shopping centre.

There has been interference before in the naming of underground stations - Fulham Broadway was a renaming of Walham Green at the lobbying of the local Chamber of Commerce, even though the original station name was more descriptive of where it was actually cited (the issue for the CoC^▸ (Chamber of Commerce TBA) being no station having the name 'Fulham' in it which is actually some way to the west of Walham Green). Mind you there may now be pressures to rename this as 'Chelsea' ...

If Ashton Gate station is reopened on the Portishead line (so that's two big ifs), should/would it be renamed 'Bristol City'? My answer is no.

Been waiting for years in the expectation that someone who lives very close to McDonalds's in Foundry Closer will accidentally fall against the fence between the two public pieces of Wiltshire Council land (Foundry Close and Station Approach) and make that ease true.

As it is, replace "An easy couple of minutes walk round the corner" with "access the road, up Station approach, through the underpass under the A350 then turn back and walk north about 100 yards alongside the A350. Cross the A350 again (pedestrian crossing) and turn left into Foundry Close for McDonald's" and your comment is current and accurate!

Keep thinking "IBM" and "British Steel Redcar" as examples of where this has been done.  Then there's Barry Links named after a Golf Course business, and Newhaven Marine which is 'advertising' the boat connection.

On that basis, perhaps there'll be a counter-application from Arsenal for the station to be named "St Totteringham".

Well, not until the site it's named for closes or moves elsewhere, like ... Arsenal did from Woolwich. I reckon the tube station was built where it is mainly for the stadium, as there was and is not much else there. Of course now the new stadium is as close to Holloway Road, so you probably don't need both.

I see no harm in the renaming of stations, subject to certain caveats.
1) The price paid should be high enough to bring significant benefit, payment in advance.
2) The renaming must be for at least 10 years and preferably much longer.
3) Renaming should not be allowed if the original name is of particular historic significance.

Plus of course following existing rules about the new name not being confusing.
