Fury at 'unacceptable and dangerous' overcrowding on Plymouth to Penzance train

GWR (Great Western Railway) has been accused of allowing "unacceptable and dangerous" overcrowding on a train that left Plymouth headed for Penzance in Cornwall this afternoon.

Chelsie Pearce, who is travelling to Truro,  shared photos of conditions on the train - where she says passengers  have been "packed on like sardines"  - at 4.22pm, less that half an hour after it left Plymouth.

She tweeted GWR and said: "GWRHelp imagine paying £10 for a train ticket and being packed on like sardines! 4pm when all the schools, colleges, commuters and unis leave. 10 carriage train reduced to a 2 carriage- unacceptable and dangerous."

GWR responded: "Sorry for any discomfort on your journey. We use all available carriages during peak travelling times. More capacity is coming over the course of the year as more new trains are delivered, which allows us to cascade existing carriages to support other routes.

"It's usually a five carriage Intercity Express Train but with the upgrade works in the tunnels between Exeter and Taunton it's not available during the work."

Logic suggests to me that if the IETs (Intercity Express Train) aren't running through Whiteball Tunnel and are only running every 2 hours via The Mule (Honiton), then shouldn't more be available for other services rather than less?

Not the only short form ... 5 cars from Chippenham into Bristol at about 12:45 today ....

Grahame, I think it might be because the diversions are mostly HSTs (High Speed Train) sourced from Laira and there aren't many left now.  Also I suspect there might be 'contractural issues' concerned with getting IETs (Intercity Express Train) back to their home depots on time for maintenance etc.

Oh - I suspect so.  But is explaining to customers who turn up for a train that it's badly under normal length that it's to do with contactual issues between different parts of the rail industry is going to be something they'll appreciate and understand the need for, or will they reasonably say "you should have sorted this out between yourselves in preparation for these three weeks"?

...mmm.  I think they need to address that question to their local MPs (Member of Parliament).  Oh, hold on a minute, they have other things on their plates at the moment.... Roll Eyes
