Last Updated:10/02/2019 11:12 This type of rail report always surprises me. Its saying the train is late, because it's late starting. That's not the reason its late, the reason is why its late starting! I frequently hear announcements similar to the following at Paddington and similar stations. 'ABC train is late departing due to its late arrival.' or 'ABC train is late due to a delayed previous train'. They might as well say the 'the train is late' and leave it at that.

Not the best start to the week: 1P04 0511 Worcester Shrub Hill to London Paddington Great Western Railway service This service was cancelled throughout due to late arrival of an inbound service (YI). 07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 08:51 will be started from Oxford. It will no longer call at Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough. This is due to a points failure.

I have a question which I'm sure the experts on this site will be able to answer! Today, the 07.10 from Moreton in Marsh, which was started from Oxford, arrived at Paddington 'on time'. When the performance statistics are being compiled, does that show as an 'on time' train despite the fact that it was cancelled between Moreton in Marsh and Oxford? If so, over the course of a year and if repeated on different lines, it could distort the figures.

Thanks, that's interesting. So it looks like the regulations are designed to incentivise controllers to make sure trains reach their destinations and are not written off early -- but there isn't a corresponding incentive to make sure they start from the correct station.

Now, did you read that slowly and carefully? CaSL was developed as a supplementary measure to PPM‡ and delay minutes to ensure trains were not ‘written off’ by controllers or signallers once they exceeded their PPM threshold. This measure helps performance recovery by not terminating a train short of its final destination and incentivising controllers or signallers to ensure the train arrives less than 30 minutes late. A cancellation is defined as the termination of a train prior to reaching its destination or the failure of a train to depart from its point of departure; for which it was scheduled to run in the applicable timetable. There are two types of cancellations: - Part – A train is considered to be a part cancellation if it covers more than half the scheduled mileage and either failed to run the whole journey or failed to stop at any station on the way. Trains completing their scheduled journey but arriving at their final destination late by 120 minutes or more also count as part cancellations;
- Full – A train is considered to be a full cancellation if it covers less than half the scheduled mileage, or does not run at all.

The 9:54 from Great Malvern, somehow blocked the line. I am guessing it failed at the turn point stuck across the points in Malvern Wells? My WM Hereford train was unable to pass, as I was on it stuck before the signal box. I assume it was an Hitachi? After 1 hour we trundled back to Great Malvern. Our driver did a good job of keeping us up to date with information, and walked our part of the train, as the TM‡ was in the 2 car behind. (Its a pity we were released from Great Malvern before the line was cleared but I guess they just hoped it was a computer reboot needed!)
The line blocked and causing disruption from around 9:45 to the 13:08 Paddington to Hereford running normally. I guess a good job not Cheltenham races day.

A number of short-formations today, perhaps a result of the failure of yesterday's 09:54 GMV: PAD» : Facilities on the 06:52 London Paddington to Great Malvern due 09:31. This is due to a fault on this train. Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.
Facilities on the 09:54 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 12:28. This is due to a fault on this train. Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.
Facilities on the 16:22 London Paddington to Great Malvern due 19:24. This is due to a fault on this train. Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.
Facilities on the 19:42 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 22:31. This is due to a fault on this train. Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9. I suspect it'll only be the 16:22 where this causes any significant crowding issues.
