So to be clear: The judge was not an idiot, and the girl was not stupid. This is the Great Western Passengers' Forum, not the Daily Express.

Pretty much the long and short of the matter!

Obiter, it may have been an out-of-court settlement, saving the often enormous legal fees, but it is still an order of the court. The judge approved it, meaning he was satisfied that the injured party hadn't been short changed, and the company hadn't been overcharged.
