It is indeed an IET▸ test run over the West of England Main Line diversionary route.
Were it not so late at night/early am I may have gone and videoed the set as it passed Chard Junction.

The first move from Laira is a positioning move to work the Test trains, possibly the Laira trainer coming back to Stoke Gifford.

Positioning move ran 1 hour late
Also a Bristol to Exeter and back move was turned around at Tiverton Loop the same evening.

Apparently, the test run did not make it through to Exeter St Davids due to an issue with Network Rail and the bank between Central and St Davids (??) The final leg back to Stoke Gifford via Honiton, Yeovil, Castle Cary and Westbury started from Exeter Central.
Let's just hope that the issue (whatever it may be) is resolved before the Whiteball Blockade in February.

Although the first run didn't reach Exeter St Davids, a further test from Laira to Axminster (and return) operated on 9 January. The next day - 10 January 2019 the West of England line saw its first diverted IET▸ in public service. An HST▸ had hit a deer near Tiverton causing a brake problem. 802006 and 802019 were on 1A88 12.04 Penzance to Paddington.
There are (I understand) some restrictions on where the units can pass etc however.

I am not sure, but I believe that there has, for many years, been a restriction on trains leaving Central until the platform at St Davids is empty. If I am right, then it is not a new fear.
