I was on an IET▸ (Intercity Express Train - replacement for HSTs (manufactured by Hitachi in Kobe, Japan)) last week with a substantial wet patch on the seat next to me - someone still sat on it even when I pointed it out (they got on at Reading heading to Paddington)

For the sake of clarity, the wet patch was not my doing!

Fun idea if you're saving a seat for someone, or even for yourself while you go to the buffet/loo/etc. But otherwise not.

Make and maintain staring eye contact. Smile creepily and pat the seat next to you welcomingly.

You'll find the person interested in the seat will quickly move on. If it looks like they're still going to sit next to you, say loudly, "It's my first day allowed back on the trains since the incident..."

Many, many years ago when I used to get the overnight train from Pompey to Plymouth I had to join the "milk/newspaper" train in Salisbury at about 3 in the morning, a small tin of Heinz vegetable soup on the compartment floor was guaranteed to dissuade others from joining you !

Personally I just take a bag with me and put it on the seat, if anyone asks if the seats reserved I just say yes. Simples!
