Disruption at Bristol Temple Meads.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/189267.aspx

And on the night FOSBR (Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways) are holding their meeting to discuss the disruptions on the Severn Beach route, how ironic.

I've noticed that some of the track has been removed at St Andrew's Road, as well as some ground levelling. It's a bit further down on the right (facing SVB) where the (diesel storage?) block house was.

Anyone shed some light on the work that's going on?

cheers

On Sunday, I had the opportunity to visit the Severn Beach line - update my photos and get out and have a look around at a couple of stations I had only passed through before.

These days, the "Severn Beach Line" is flourishing.  Trains every 40 minutes (weekdays) and every hour (Sundays) are well used.  Of course, not all parts of the week our busy and we left Temple Meads on Sunday with quite a light load, but substantial numbers of passengers got on at Lawrence Hill and Stapleton Road, and as we turned off the 4 track main line headed north at Narroways Junction onto the single track branch, the train was comfortably "very busy".   Passengers off and on - in good and balanced numbers - at both Montpelier and Redland, then into the passing loop at Clifton Down where we passed the Bristol-bound train.

The majority of people left the train at Clifton Down and only a very few got on ... and we were on our way again through the tunnel under the down, bursting out alongside the River Avon just downstream of the gorge.  At this time of year - before the leaves have grown on the trees - there are some spectacular views; hard to photograph though.  And so on to Sea Mills - one of the lesser used stations, Shirehampton, and Avonmouth.

There is a further loop at Avonmouth, and during the week two out of three trains turn back there, with just a service every 2 hours onward.  On a Sunday, all services run on to St Andrew's Road, and "The Beach".  St Andrew's road is set in amongst the industry; Severn Beach is now a commuter toen for Bristol, although the industry of Severnside is very close by indeed, and it's a growing business area.

Although it's known as "The Severn Beach Line", most passengers don't get even half way to Severn Beach Station, with the inner section full to bursting much of the time; plans are to step the service up to every 30 minutes.  Ticket checking / revenue collection becomes an issue - even on a Sunday, the conductor didn't get to the middle carriage until we were nearly at Clifton Down, and I suspect a number of free journeys were enjoyed by people on the train for short inner station hops - with the exception of Temple Meads, all stations are "open".

Is Bristol Temple Meads a half hourly service, or an hourly one?

19:12 Bristol Temple Meads to Avonmouth due 19:39

19:12 Bristol Temple Meads to Avonmouth due 19:39 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

Evidently not just the Beach Line but also a few more according to what I've read.  Other lines covered include Trans Wilts and Heart of Wessex if I remember correctly.
I'm going to try to download it and give it a test drive on the Beach Line next week.

This line can give you a great view of Bristol – a gritty, glitzy, creative and historic city. It’ll get you out into some fantastic wide open spaces too.

Well I don't know about all the other Montpeliers, but my local one now has a brand new ticket machine!

Good that it's working....I'll have to check Redland Station out.  I see that the departure board is still awaiting the arrival of the, erm, departure board but everything else is looking ready.

The ticket machine at Redland was still showing "out of service" or similar message on Saturday. Maybe it's working this morning?

And on an only somewhat related note, I've noticed that the "Things to do locally" board at Redland mentions the ornate houses on "Freemantle Road". Freemantle Road is in Eastville, sandwiched between Fishponds Road and the M32. The road the board is referring to, with its high terraces (postman's nightmare!) is of course Fremantle Road. But I'm sure the tourists cope with this!

I'll have a look at Redland Station tomorrow on my travels if it dry enough for my intended plod around the Bath area countryside.
I can certainly confirm that Fremantle Road does indeed have high terraces, a friend of mine had a large flat there until somewhat over a decade ago but I have to admit to not spotting the spolling mistook on the station information board.

Update, Redland Station ticket machine still not in service yesterday but FoSBR» (Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways - site) sources inform me that the new ticket machine at Montpelier now has a rain shelter too.  Working ticket machine AND rainshelter?  Blatant oneupmanship!
