Is it only me or are others baffled by the fact that in the week Notwork Snail gets fined ^14,000,000 its chairman Ian McAllister gets a knighthood?

Shouldn't he get a P45 rather than a knighthood? Also how does a fine help the passenger?

Does this indicate just how far out of touch the government is?

It's not only FGW (First Great Western) that has questions to answer.

Personally, I agree with you, Andy W.

See the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) News story, at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7267658.stm, and a quote from towards the end of the item:

"The ORR» (Office of Rail and Road, formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) fine came on the same day that the chairman of Network Rail, Sir Ian McAllister, was knighted by the Prince of Wales for "services to transport."

At the time of the disruption in January, Sir Ian declined to come into work because he said he would "only get in the way."

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
