It's an engine, and it was built - but at what stage did it start life as such an entity?  The laying down of the first axle, or the maiden run under its own steam?  Undecided

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

I can't cite sources, but I've read somewhere that a locomotive exists from the point where its frames are completed.

My first thought on seeing the thread title was Ralph Fiennes having telecommunications issues in the film In Bruges.

Indeed, they start life when the frames are completed, and the first run under their own steam is more like coming of age.
DMUs▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) are different, I think that they hatch from larvae or something.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.
