Was it just coincidence that the announcement was made in Inexperiencedwich?

Dunno, but in French doesn't inexperience mean "unexperimented" ie untested?
Not quite - though those two words are jumbled together meaningwise in French. Ah, it seems experience = experiment as a noun but not as a verb. At least if Google is to be trusted...

I would regard railway electrification using existing and well understood technology to be a higher priority than research into automated submarines. Likewise electrification of urban buses by means of trolley wires or batteries.
And generating a lot more electricity from proven wind and solar power, there is little point in replacing diesel fuel with imported natural gas used to generate the electricity.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard. It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc. A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

I have seen reports that the Treasury has put a stop to any plans for such bridge.

I remember hearing a Transport Union leader being asked about his plans replying:
"I'm going to jump off that bridge when I come to it".

I still think we should get the gwml electrified sll the way to Swansea. So do I, but I also still think we need a capacity intervention (either a new shorter and straighter GWML▸ between Cardiff and Bridgend, effectively making it a 4-track railway, or some passenger loops AT STATIONS between Cardiff and Bridgend on the existing GWML to allow fast trains to overtake stoppers) first. While we are waiting for that we should get the GWML electrified to Bristol (the remodelling is done now) and possibly Oxford (depending on whether the planned remodelling would have a significant impact on the OHLE if the wires were done first).

If any of the long campaigned for stations between Bristol and Chippenham (St Anne's, Saltford, Corsham) were to come into being after the electrification was done, would that be much more complicated than putting the stations in then the knitting?
