Good answers to my question folks, thanks; my opinion now is that the season ticket practice of an admin fee on the second occasion sounds like it would be a good solution for railcards too. Of course, as others have mentioned, the railcards are inconsistent anyway, with seniors trusted not to share and the young requiring a photo card.

Don't DOO^▸ it, keep the guard (but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea if the driver unlocked the doors on arrival at calling points).
