So although windscreens may be 'broken' it would need quite a large stone or rock to 'penetrate' the windscreen.

Or a medium sized tree branch.

Who astonishingly escaped with only minor injuries, I am glad to say.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

That night in questions was the worst we've seen the sea state in a long while. The force of the waves isn't the problem. Its what is thrown up in the waves that is.
The windscreens aren't smashed as such, they merely just crack. You need some considerable force or a very large object to break through the glass.
When the weather is bad Network Rail engineers travel across the seawall with each train, and they normally impose a 20mph speed restriction. They have the ability to either close the down main line or shut the line completely if they consider it too unsafe.
The decision to keep running trains is on there heads so they won't take any chances.
The pictures make it look worse than it actually is. You don't really feel anything when you're hit by a wave plus the ballast is glued down.

And in the Lavington incident with the tree it was more a case that the branch penetrated the fibreglass cab surround, pushing the windscreen in.

Yes, that's why the signallers should never send an HST (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) down a branch line.  Roll Eyes Shocked Grin
