Government must rebuild trust on our railways after a summer of discontent

With speculation that beleaguered rail customers could be hit with a fares rise when the latest RPI^▸ (Revenue Protection Inspector (or Retail Price Index, depending on the context)) figures are released on Tuesday, Which? says more needs to be done to ensure that long-suffering passengers receive better compensation for journeys that are disrupted.

The Which? Consumer Insight Tracker reveals trust in the train sector has dropped over the last year, with only 26% people trusting train companies (July 2016 down 7 percentage points on July 2015), and distrust rising to 30% (July 2016 up 7 percentage points from July 2015).

My bolding.   I would be interested in the percentages trusting Network Rail, the Department for Transport and other government agencies, and the rail unions.    Is it really for the train companies to bear all the responsibility for the lack of trust , when there are headlines like "The Tories are ready to crush ‘bully boy’ rail unions" in The Sunday Express. Thoughts, anyone?

I don't think it's relevant to be honest - I pay my money to a TOC^▸ (Train Operating Company) and I should be able to trust them to provide an acceptable service in all aspects, managing their infrastructure providers and other stakeholders is up to them. No good organisation or service provider should ever attempt to transfer blame back down the line (so to speak!)

If I buy a sandwich from a supermarket and it turns out to be stale, it's the supermarket I complain to and who lose my trust, not their supply chain.

I think most sensible people draw their own conclusions about the brethren of the RMT^▸ (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers).

I think you might find many in the industry think the same. They seem very selective about what they take on on behalf of their members.
