A FERNHILL Heath woman is “heartbroken†after a train sprayed weed killer into her garden, killing half the plants.
Wendy Filby, of Station Road, believes Network Rail sprayed her garden on Sunday, June 26, while trying to tackle trackside weeds.
“I could have cried with what they have done. Our runner beans, blueberries, raspberries and rhubarb are all totally ruined,†she said.
“It’s not the price of the seeds, it’s the time invested. The cost of planting, weeding, digging, watering and putting up nets to stop the pigeons.

After a raft of complaints in 2014, Network Rail sent compensation forms to residents and asked them for seed receipts as proof.

I'm the sole yes (so far) My wife gives me hell for hoarding receipts. Every receipt for everything I've bought since we moved house is in the end kitchen drawer. Every train ticket goes in a photo album!   |

I'm not 100% convinced that NR» were culpable - compared to the state of some of the permanent way in this neck of the woods the track featured in the website photo looks absolutely pristine; if the supposedly cash-strapped NR were responsible then they should probably consider spending less on weed killer.
As to the final paragraph of the 'news' report, 'A Network Rail spokesman declined to comment but said they were aware of the complaint and are investigating.', I assume checking their maintenance schedule would permit NR to say if they were potentially guilty in something like 30 seconds - hardly a major investigation!

In my experience, a lot of small, local, family run garden centres use ancient tills which simply produce a piece of paper the size of a postage stamp with the total paid printed on it - not an itemised list of every seed contained in each packet. |

I bought a rhubarb plant at the Saturday market in South Molton, partly because I like rhubarb, partly because Mrs FT, N! wanted a rhubarb plant, partly because I find the stallholder rather attractive. The plant failed to flourish, despite her advice over the whole spring and summer, and she eventually asked me to dig it up and return it, so she could throw it on the compost heap to rejuvenate it. The replacement fired up at once, is now at least four plants, and will provide my dessert tomorrow as part of a crumble, along with West Country clotted cream from Wisemans dairy near Bridgewater, bought at Lidl.
At Ash Moor Nursery, their word is their bond.
Other markets, nurseries, rhubarb, dairies, and discount supermarkets are available. None are as good. Try the corn bread at South Molton market if you can get there before it sells out, and don't miss the cheese stall. Epoisses stinks, but is the nicest after dinner cheese I know. Taw Valley Cheddar and Exmoor Blue - ohhh!
