Scenario ... Prior to joining a train at an unmanned GWR (Great Western Railway) station with a ticket machine, I purchased my ticket correctly.  But while awaiting the train, I received an email cancelling the appointment I was to travel to and I returned home.  The ticket had a 5 day outward / month return validity and I retained it, expecting to travel later in the week, but will not now be doing so.  I'm not a great one for refunds, but ... can I?

Clearly I can't return it to where it was bought.   I'll be at another GWR station with an open (I hope) ticket office tomorrow - can they organise a refund. Yeah, I know - not there problem I didn't travel, and do I feel morally justified in reclaiming - the ethic issue, even if the rules allow it.

No issue getting refund but is subject to £10 admin fee. You have 28 days to apply for it.

No, I accept the admin fee - very fare / "my silly fault" ... for buying the ticket then finding I wasn't headed ...

Any ticket office should be able to accept the refund. Some refunds may have to go via accounts if it's a station that's not able to process refunds themselves, but this wouldn't stop them from being able to accept the refund to get it processed.

I seem to remember being in a similar - but not identical - situation in that I had bought a day return from Thatcham to Paddington (no travel card). I made the inbound journey but just as I got to the concourse Paddington for my return journey I got an email asking me to go somewhere not covered by GWR (Great Western Railway). So as I was at the station - with my wits about me for once - I took the ticket into the  Paddington ticket office where they filled in the form and sent it away to be processed and (I think) about 8 days later I got the unused portion of the ticket - 10% refunded.-

Yes, not that clear...what I meant was...

about 8 days later I got the (unused portion of the ticket - 10%) refunded.

If you get my meaning!
