As we left Yate just after 8am, we were signalled onto the down line and stopped for about 10 minutes outside Westerleigh Junction - this was odd. Nobody overtook us and we waited for about 5-10 minutes after a Paddington train cleared the line - again a bit odd as there is no need to wait for so long.

After we left Westerleigh Junction, we transferred back onto the correct side, and arrived into Parkway about 15 minutes late - completely unnecessary delay, but why?

2nd time I have got the train to Bristol in a month, and whether by chance or not, same thing happened again. Left Yate, waited for 1 minute at the next signal, then transferred on the up line to the junction and then transferred back to normal again.

This happened this morning about 7.30am.

Previously happened in the morning on 16th February.

Any reason why again. Seems very strange!

It's the usual route at the moment.  The switch diamond crossing on the down (southbound) line was faulty and plain lined whilst awaiting replacement

I knew I could count on this forum to know the reason why - was wondering myself as I noticed this a month or so ago!

I'm currently aboard a 170 forming 1V51 from Cheltenham to Bristol, going over said curve the 'wrong' way now; I'm sure this has been happening for a while so must be quite a serious fault!

Can I ask what plain lining is - at a guess is it something to do with being stuck in a certain position?

Plain lining is replacing a piece of switch & crossing (pointwork) with ordinary track usually as a temporary measure.

Evidenced by how rusty the down line is between Yate South Jcn and Westerleigh Jcn. Noticed that when passing the area in the up direction last week.

I'll bet you didn't go beyond Bristol Parkway on 1V51 as 170s not authorised beyond. They would probably be OK, but the policy now is just to quote routes over which traction is intended.   Can always be cleared later if required and all is OK.
