It is hoped the bridge will re-open by "early April 2016"

Motorists in Bristol face six months of delays while a busy city centre bridge is shut for repairs.

The Prince Street bridge has become "heavily corroded" and needs refurbishing, the council said.

During the closure a three-metre-wide temporary footbridge for cyclists and pedestrians will be built.

A council spokesman said he appreciated the "frustrations" motorists will face but said it is necessary for the "complicated maintenance" needed.

During the works, the road surface will be removed to expose the decking and any corroded cross-members will be replaced or refurbished.

The bridge will be shut to motor vehicles from 17 August with the full closure from 29 September once the temporary bridge is built.

It is hoped it will re-open "in early April 2016", although because the work is weather-dependent, and until the decking and timbers are removed, the exact time required is only an estimate.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

I can think of some corroded cross members on this forum who are due for refurbishment  or could be replaced ! Shocked Roll Eyes Grin
