The driver of the 11.10AM Stratford-upon-Avon to Stourbridge Junction service was forced to activate the emergency brake when he spotted two men using chainsaws near Shirley Station on Monday 11th May.
Sergeant Roberts, said: ^The men were using chainsaws to cut down the trees and wearing noise-cancelling ear protectors making it impossible for them to hear oncoming trains.
They had no authority to be on the line, and were clearly risking their lives and the lives of everyone on the train which was forced to stop.
Remarkably, the men continued to chop down the trees after the train had come to a stop, but left the scene before police arrived.
However, the driver of the train was able to take a picture of the duo on his cameraphone.^
Officers have spoken to people in the area and contacted local businesses, but are continuing to make enquiries to to identify the men.
Sergeant Roberts, added: ^I cannot stress enough just how dangerous the actions of these men were.
Fortunately for them, the train driver acted quickly to bring the train to a halt. Had he not done so, we could have been dealing with a very serious incident indeed.
Trespass and obstruction of the railway is a serious matter. We need to find the men involved, please tell us who they are.^
Please call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference MSUB/B6 of 09/06/2015, if you have ANY information. Shirley they must have twigged this was wrong?

Recent similar story on TV▸ about trees being chopped down in Plymouth - theory is wood burning stoves as trees were selected for size!

Trespass on the railway is clearly on offense, but in the spirit of recent discussions about ancient sounding offenses under the Railway Bylaws (obstruction of an engine etc), I wonder if there might be a case for a pre-railway mediaeval offense along the lines of "estover without royal warrant"?
And if people in Plymouth have been chopping down trees for their stoves, is that as case of estover in Estover- Estover being a suburb of Plymouth

I lived in Shirley for much of my youth and family still inhabit this inglorious suburb. The most amusing thing that ever happened was the naming of a Chinese Restaurant that opened in the 60s as the 'Shirley Temple'. Not sure it has the same resonance to the under 60s.
That excitement tells you all.

It's a thing. Parks up by the Royal West of England Academy at the bottom of Whiteladies Road in Bristol. Outside what was once Habitat. I've eaten food from the 'Jason Donervan' and I'm still alive to recount this anecdote . |
