St Austell-Newquay line catching local attention

The link below reports a groundswell of local opinion in favour of the rerouting of the Par-Newquay branchline via St Austell & Burngullow.

This has been muted for years now and it won't happen,theres too much work required to re-instate the present line quality, let alone the bit thats missing
Network rail , believe it or not, have spent lots of money replacing worn track between Ponts Mill and Goonbarrow , with more to do soon,I cant see them closing it down to freight only and spending 5 times as much again on the track between Burngullow and St Dennis Jn.
 I wonder if this story is attempt to scupper the plans to rail waste to the new incinerator (if it ever gets built). A passenger service over the line would surely prevent freight from operating any sort of reasonable service over the line again

I love this bit from the article:

Jack Burnett, from St Dennis, said: "I can remember when the train line was operational back in the '60s and what it meant to the local community.

"The trains would take products from the China Clay industry all the way down to Par and provided a quick, reliable and efficient method of transportation.

"On the weekends when the service wasn't running, all the locals would walk the way the tracks ran. It was great way of sampling the beauty of the Clay area."

Some of the trackbed is being used not far from St Dennis by a farmer and DRS^» (Direct Rail Services Ltd, a national rail freight operator providing a range of services with its head office in Carlisle and depots at the South East, York, Crewe, Sellafield, and Scotland. - about) Demolition I believe.

A decision on the bids will be made within the next two weeks.

Imerys says it expects to release 750 hectares for development in Clay Country over the next one to three years and is working with a "highly experienced and reputable development partner" on plans for up to three small developments at Blackpool, Burngullow and Bugle. A site close to St Dennis has also been identified as having potential.

Transport and tourism initiatives are also suggested.

'Focal^▸ (Friends of the Atlantic Coast Line [Newquay])' (the Newquay Line supporters Group) have just been featured on ITV Westcountry News this evening. It was also in the local press last week - so it gathering (albeit slow) momentum.

The concept of a Newquay, Par, St. Austell and St. Dennis Rail Loop is a fascinating one.

A St. Dennis reader suggests that the proposed waste incinerator plant at St. Dennis should be used to finance the reconstruction of the St Dennis Junction-Parkandillack link.
