The 10:50 XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) service from Paignton to Manchester Piccadilly has been disabled near Tiverton after colliding with a tree.

FGW (First Great Western) are diverting some of their West of England services via Honiton and thus missing out calls at Tiverton Parkway and Taunton.

No reported injuries but the XC train has been stranded for over two and a half hours so far.

Not content with that the 09:22 Eastleigh to Manchester failed between Reading and Didcot

Appears they managed to get it into P5 at Didcot before moving some 3 hours later

The impact with the tree pushed the lifeguard so far back that it was in contact with the wheel causing damage to the wheel itself.  Believe they had to get staff out to remove the lifeguard before they could move the train.

(A lifeguard is the lump of metal in front of the leading wheel of a train designed to deflect obstacles and prevent them going under the wheels)

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

I can't find a clear picture of a 'lifeguard' on a Class 220/221 Voyager, but here's one clearly marked on a HST (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) power car:
