Hanwell Station gets ^300,000 second entrance

The second entrance was originally closed in the 1970s. Restoring the original design was identified as a key priority to improve access to the station and ease commuter congestion.

A second entrance to Hanwell Station has been opened to commuters for the first time in more than three decades.

The ^300,000 project to restore the abandoned entrance on Station Approach also includes new paving, improved lighting, new CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) cameras, a new canopy, and cycle parking.

The second entrance was originally closed in the 1970s. Restoring the original design was identified as a key priority to improve access to the station and ease commuter congestion.

The work is in keeping with the heritage of the Grade II listed building and was given listed building consent and approval from English Heritage.

Ealing Council contributed ^50,000 to the project, and ^250,000 was provided by TfL» (Transport for London - about), while First Great Western managed the construction of the site.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: ^For the first time in years residents in Hanwell will have better access to the station to help them with their daily commute. This is something that they have been asking for and I am delighted that we have been able to deliver these improvements.^

David Rowe, Head of Borough Projects and Programmes at TfL, said; ^It is great that the funding we are providing has enabled a second entrance to be opened at Hanwell station. This will significantly improve convenience and reduce journey times for users, in advance of TfL Crossrail services running from 2018. Further improvements are also planned that will make trips to and from the station even easier, by better integrating rail with other transport options.^

First Great Western Regional Manager, Ian Gunn said: ^First Great Western recognises the key role that rail travel has in supporting the local and national economy and we are delighted to announce the completion of this important work, improving access to the station and the full range of services we offer. During the previous franchise over ^85 million has been invested across our network of 210 stations, by working with rail industry partners, the DfT» (Department for Transport - about), and local authorities.^

Further work planned for the station includes installing step-free access as part of preparations for Crossrail, which is expected to begin service in 2018. There are also plans for a new crossing on Station Approach and enhancements to the wider CCTV in the area.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
