Alternative forms of overhead electrification and point work

Subject says it all, really.

Not a passenger carrying railway, but it does show how electric trains can run at what (one presumes) is a low cost. Could the health and safety concerns be overcome to us this system on re-instated roadside tramways such as Weston, Clevedon and Portishead, the Wantage Tramway, Kemble to Cirencester, and many more through the South West? Wink

Note - lighter side post. NOT a serious suggestion!

There were lots of gems like this behind the Iron Curtain which suvived long after similar systems in the West.

On the serious side the obvious answer for Portshead is tram/trains running on the road at 600V Dc in Portishead and then onto the mainline at 25KV 50 cycles.

Seems perfectly feasible for a passenger operation. Using the wand and setting the points seems pretty straight forward, although there would be some concern about disabled users.

I'm also not convinced by the unloading method. I'd prefer some saloon type doors fitted to the carriage sides rather than tipping the passengers out.
