I'm trying to work out what has gone wrong at Paisley ... which appears (map wise) to have got into a bit of a mess

Looking further, I came across Yarm.   It's correct on the ma, so I'm going off topic, but it was a new one on me as my knowledge of the area is way out of date.   And it turns out to be interesting - a Beeching era (?) closure, re-opening, with service now up to hourly.  Traffic levels around 130k per annum.  Town population around 9k.

I am always watching for indicators of what's likely to happen in my home town of Melksham when - it looks like in just a few weeks now - the services increase to a much better level so that business, leisure and commuting by rail from the town becomes practical as far as the availability of trains is concerned.  With a population of around 3 times that of Yarm, we're looking at around 350k journeys per annum, which is a significant increase from current figures.  I have a meeting this morning which is going to be reviewing the promised LSTF (Local Sustainable Transport Fund) plans to handle these numbers ... there was a joined-up scheme there, but I'm seeing slippage beyond recognition of the original plans and I'm wondering ...

That's a candidate for worst schematic map of the year.

I love the distortions. The York - Scarborough - Hull - Selby - York rectangle is roughly the same size as Manchester - Marple - Chinley - Stockport - Manchester.

The red circles and asterisks are all over the place. The nuance about same line / different line isn't always observed correctly. Runcorn is particularly hopeless - what is the "different line" here. It's the Warrington - Chester line, but no Runcorn dot is shown. And Helensburgh should have a dot rather than an asterisk.

Meanwhile, some more oddities...

Helmsdale has no station.

Wemyss Bay has a line from Greenock instead of from Paisley.

The Corby junction faces the wrong way. As does Reading - Basingstoke.

There's a connection off HS1 (High Speed line 1 - St Pancras to Channel Tunnel) to Gravesend, but not to any of the other lines that it crosses.

Very low marks indeed.

I also noticed the Wemyss Bay branch is shown "the wrong way round", i.e. it looks like through trains come from Gourock, rather than Paisley/Glasgow.

Zoom in on London and you'll see the line from London Bridge to Cannon Street crosses over Thameslink ... which simply isn't the case.

The line from Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton appears to connect to the Coventry to Nuneaton line before Nuneaton whereas they do not connect at all.

According to my Trackatalas 2nd edition the Coventry Nuneaton lines double track passes through the station (platfroms on both lines) and under the Leicester Line Flyover and the new North freight curve and  swings West to join the Leicester - Birmingham line facing Birmingham at a single lead junction called Abbey Jn.  Not East facing Leicester as on the ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies See - here) map.

Nuneaton is one of the places where sensible realignments, new platforms and a new freight spur has reduced conflicts at flat junctions and considerabley increased capacity on both the WCML (West Coast Main Line) and the very busy Leicester Birmingham line

Abbey Jn also has access to the WCML in the Euston direction. Has been used as diversionary route to avoid Coventry requires diesel haulage.

This one is not so much an error, though if you are being pedantic it is, it looks like Bristol to Weymouth trains have to reverse at Westbury to continue their journey.
And it looks as if trains don't have to reverse at Carmarthen or Swansea.

Don't DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) it, keep the guard (but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea if the driver unlocked the doors on arrival at calling points).

Also wrong between Oxenhope (Lake Disrtrict) and Lancaster. Doesn't show Carnforth just line from Barrow joiningng WCML (West Coast Main Line). Line from Leeds joins  at same spot as Morecombe line instead of Carnforth. So no way Leeds Morecombe trains can run.

Also East of Norwich doesn't show two routes to Great Yarmouth.

Stalybridge, North of and Rotherham, East of Sheffield

Includes branch to Henley, but not to Marlow.

Calls Stourbridge Town just Stourbridge (on a very long branch from Stourbridge Junct ...)

Misses out Aylesbury Parkway truncating line at Aylesbury

Reading to Gatwick not considered a principal route.

Resulted in the closure of the Coventry->Leicester service though (and the concept that nearly made it to extend at both ends as Nottingham to Oxford).

According to Passenger Services over unsual lines

http://www.psul4all.free-online.co.uk/2013.htm

The following services use the line between Corby and Oakham:

Corby - Manton Junction (49,53) CJ04
1M06 0930 SSuX Corby - Derby
1M61 1800 SSuX St.Pancras International - Melton Mowbray
1P69 1635 SSuX Derby - St.Pancras International
1P10 0601 SSuX Melton Mowbray - St.Pancras International
^ SUNDAYS FROM 15 SEPTEMBER UNTIL 20 OCTOBER 2013:
Trains between Kettering and Leicester

As can been seen it also used as a diversionary route and is popular with rail tours as it goes over the 1275 yd long 82 arch Welland Viaduct aka Harringworth. You can see the remains of the junction station at Seaton which was one of those remote country junctions where several cross country routes met, unfortunately all were closed with Beeching.
