A special offer, running until 1st November 2013 gives ^10 off the Family & Friends Railcard, ^20 instead of the usual ^30.

If you travel more than a couple of times a year with at least one child, then this card is well worth having. In fact at ^20 you may well make a saving on one trip. The card gives 1/3 off all Adult Standard Class (incl. Std Advance) tickets and 60% off the equivalent Child tickets.

The only time restrictions barring use of the card are for the Monday-Friday morning peak on journeys wholly within the London and South East area.

The offer is available through the following link:

I wonder how many people will be misled by this statement: "So for just ^20 a year you will get a year's worth of rail fares for you and your friends and family."

Implies to me that all your rail fares for a year are included in the ^20 Roll Eyes

Oh - is that not the case?  Shocked

I've already bought one, on the basis of my understanding that it did include all the rail fares for a year for me and my friends and family ...  Embarrassed

That's what it said on that site - which is ^ 2013 ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies See - here) Ltd  Roll Eyes

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

I've got no friends so I couldn't get a card anyway!   Grin Grin

Seriously though I do agree it is a rather sweeping statement on behalf of the promoters that someone will no doubt attempt to exploit.

So for just ^20 a year you will get a year's worth of rail fares for you and your friends and family.

It's an unfortunate error omitting the word 'discounted' from that sentence. Also, 'get' should really be 'be entitled to'.

However, the full terms and conditions of the use of the railcard (one linked click away from the special offer page) do state quite clearly the entitlement.

Furthermore, the website's Liability Disclaimer will protect ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies See - here) from any legal claim arising from the poorly composed sentence:

This does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

Caveat emptor.

At best, from all that, the most you would be entitled to would be a refund on the purchase price of the railcard if you bought it thinking the twenty quid would give you and your family & friends a years worth of rail travel at no further cost.

Oh my. I'm defending ATOC. I think I need a lie down.

Finally. My forum signature isn't just a nice scrolling image of original livery Class 43 power cars. Note the text.

EDIT: I do think though that there should be some legal avenue to explore for holding ATOC (a UK (United Kingdom) corporate body) to account for the US spelling of 'endeavours'.  Tongue
