http://www.connectingwiltshire.co.uk/connecting-your-journeys/projects/melksham-rail-station/With the upcoming launch of the new TransWilts rail service, Wiltshire Council, Network Rail and First Great Western are working together to improve Melksham rail station. By December 2014 the following measures will be complete:
Using road markings and coloured surfacing, a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists will be marked along the access road and across the old station forecourt.
Improving parking for rail users.
Further improvements will be made by Spring 2014. These will include:
Widening of the footway on the A365 to improve access for cyclists.
The refurbishment of the access ramp to the underpass and of the underpass itself under the A350.
Wiltshire Council is also investigating whether bus stops on the A365 can be provided.
Discussed at the Melksham Railway Development Group meeting last night, along with many other fast-moving elements.
The group welcomes the improvements, and is asking Wiltshire Council for clarification on
* what if anything will be done by December 2013 (is the "2014" a typo in the text above?)
* access across council land to Foundry Close for Pedestrians and Cyclists (%)
* how many extra spaces "improved parking" means on the earmarked council owned land (%)
* whether the council will also be working together with the community (
MRDG» and
TWCRP» ) on this.
* bus services 14 and 15 to the station (%)
* Additional signage space at station (%)
* Footway widening (a new one on us!)
Matters marked (%) were highlighted by the community to the council and its consultants and are regarded by the MRDG members as priorities. At the same time, the group appreciates the expertise of the consultants and council in pre-identifying issues that will arise with a large increase in usage, and appreciates their judgement that improved pedestrian and cycle markings on the roadway are a good idea.
