Slightly unusual event at Nailsea & Backwell early this morning.

The 21:45 Paddington to Exeter St Davids service experienced braking problems and after efforts to fix the issue failed it was decided to get all the passengers off the train at Nailsea. They were left there under the care of the train manager while the driver took the poorly HST (High Speed Train) back to Bristol and returned with a replacement.

Their journey then continued nearly two hours late. I am not sure how long they were sitting around at Nailsea but I assume things might have been done differently if it had been a cold mid-winter's night.

Did it have to run wrong line back to Bristol?

Thankfully it was a warm dry night, as there isn't much shelter, and being on an embankment is exposed to wind and rain.

Apparently it went to Yatton and crossed over. So the pour souls at Nailsea saw their train disappear before coming back past them on its way to Bristol.

I hope the replacement service didn't enforce the "set down only" at Nailsea and leave them all waiting there.  Grin

Was the problem such that the pax couldn't have travelled back to Bristol with the train, and at least had seating, toilet, buffet facilities etc?

Now you are asking. As non-railway I have no idea but I do know there are some faults which mean a train HAS to be taken out of passenger service at the next available station.

One assumes that the driver would have continued gingerly had that been at all possible. It's a faff for him to have to nip back to Bristol via Yatton for a new train. I assume the fault was such that passengers could not be carried, for reasons of either safety or law.

I am not sure how long they were sitting around at Nailsea ...

Not much chance of 'sitting around' in any sort of comfort, either, at Nailsea & Backwell - we have only four bus-type perspex shelters, with limited bench seats, on the whole station.  My sincere sympathy to those temporarily stranded here in such unusual circumstances.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

I'm guessing the petrol station isn't open 24hrs either!

No, the nearest 24 hour shop is the Tesco petrol station, in Nailsea town centre - which, as bignosemac has found out on a previous visit, is a fair old hike up from the railway station!  Grin

On a positive at least the driver returned with another train. I imagine the wait for rail replacement buses to be arranged and arrive would have been much longer than 2 hours at that time in the early hours of a Saturday morning.

Coupled with the fact the 21:45 outstables at Exeter to form an early morning service back to London so it was useful to get a replacement down there.  Driver was probably quite pleased too as I suspect he might have been working back home to the West Country.

While Chris from Nailsea can offer his wholehearted sympathy to all those travellers thus stranded, Mrs CfN's opinion will most certainly differ.  Roll Eyes Tongue Lips sealed

Judging by some of the types who travel on late night trains we see reported on these pages, who can blame her!   Grin

I have similar issues with Mrs FTN.
