Cardiff Central to Ealing Broadway. National Rail & Red Spotted Hanky disagree

Help please

Question one. Can you travel between Cardiff & Ealing Broadway via Paddington for the same fare as direct (change at Reading)
National Rail quotes the same fare, whilst RSH does not.
My son finishes at Cardiff University at the end of the month and we will be meeting him at Ealing on 1st June. The aim is for him to travel on the 13.25 ex Cardiff 1st class with a 16-25 railcard.
National Rail quotes ^26.75 either route but RSH agrees direct but quotes an alarming ^168 via Paddington.
If I can be assured that via Paddington is legitimate I can just buy the RSH ticket (change at Reading) and tell him to go via Paddington as I suspect there is no routeing on ticket.
RSH because of Tesco!!!! Thank you in advance

16-25 railcard is not valid with normal (walk up) First Class I'm afraid, only First Advance.

There are definitely different fares for direct and via Paddington.

As far as I can tell the standard offpeak of ^39.00 (^25.75 with railcard) has the following restriction:

ROUTE OF TICKET NOT VIA LONDON - Travel must NOT involve London.

The standard off-peak at ^41.50 (^27.40 with railcard) is the fare you need:

ROUTE OF TICKET ANY PERMITTED - Travel is allowed by any route option shown by the Journey Planner where the journey can be made using only one ticket.

If you ask for a first class fare with a 16-25 railcard I expect the discount will be ignored - and that's your ^168 'Anytime' fare, as there are no Offpeak First Class available.

Yes, the 26.75 first class advance fare does appear to be valid via Paddington if you force a change at Paddington. I suggest you try and book it through the FGW^▸ booking engine, and go for it if it lets you, making sure your son keeps a copy of the itinerary with him.

Very good value given it's less than two weeks away.
