Swindon Advertiser.AN EXCITING new project which aims to encourage people to find alternate ways of travelling to and from Swindon railway station is being officially launched next week.
Swindon has been recognised as a town that has excellent rail links, but suffers from inadequate parking and heavy congestion on the roads.
The new project, implemented by Sustrans, will encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport when making their way to the railway station.
Adrian Roper, south west regional director at Sustrans, said: ^It is important that we make it as easy as possible to walk and cycle to the station as it is a great way for local residents and workers to get some exercise, keep healthy and to reduce congestion in the town.^
The number of commuters passing through Swindon station is on the rise and if the number of car journeys made is proportionate, the station^s car park will not be able to cope.
^Congestion around Swindon station can be a problem,^ said Keith Williams, cabinet member for leisure and strategic transport at Swindon Council.
^With the planned expansion of the town this could get worse and stifle local economic growth unless new solutions can found."
The launch of the Swindon Access to Stations project will take place at 5pm on Thursday, April 11, at Steam.
