Off peak return from newbury to sheffield board at Thatcham ?

I need to travel to Sheffield from Thatcham later today so went down to Thatcham station earlier to buy a ticket from the TVM^▸ (Ticket Vending Machine). I know from experience that when the weather is damp (it is snowing here today) the touch screen doesn't work so I drove to newbury to buy my ticket.

However because I didn't think about it at the time I have ended up with a standard off peak ticket from newbury to Sheffield (via reading) instead.

So my question is simply can I board the train at Thatcham instead? I know with some tickets this isn't allowed

You can with walk up tickets - it is Advance Purchase ones you can't - with those you must start and finish at the stations shown and travel on the booked service.

All they need to do now is move the failed freight train at Southcote and you'll be fine!

Unfortunately its not quite that simple: breaking your journey is *always* permitted on the return portion of an off-peak ticket. However, there are some restrictions on break-of-journey on the outward leg, especially on some flows priced by Virgin. Usually this is intended to prevent people travelling to a major city such as London buying a much cheaper ticket to a destination just beyond then alighting short.

However in this case you're fine: the GBP 90.50 (route Not London) and GBP 166.00 (route +Any Permitted) both allow break of journey on the outward and return legs.
