Anyone remember the booby prize on one of Dave Lee Travis's Radio 1 phone-in quizzes? A phoneless cord. i.e. a length of string. Ah, DLT - best remembered for his graceful resignation speech from Radio 1. Now when I hear his name I tend to think of a sandwich.

Completely unprized, my then girlfriend, now wife, and I were regular contributors to the "Double Worder" spot in the late 1970s. I'm expecting a visit from the boys in blue...

Spotted on a former station hotel today: "All customers are requested to smoke at the rear of the building".
Which I must confess put me off going in rather, as I gave up smoking years ago and have no wish to go somewhere that makes it compulsory.

Not overally railway related. Although quite near to St Phillips Marsh Railway Depot in Bristol. This one really hurts my head.

20:46 Bath Spa - London Paddington this Saturday: TM‡ announcement: "We were delayed due to a late arrival into Weston-Super-Mare, T hen further delayed by a late running service between Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa" That'll be the same train we're all sat on then... 2O98 was the 20:49 Bristol Temple Meads - Weymouth Service which was running in front and was also on time....

At Paisley Gilmour Street: "Ticket barrier checks are in operation". No-one checked my ticket. Should say "may be in operation".

Why? A check can be operating and still not check 100% of tickets. More to the point (at least in this thread) were the barriers checked?

No barriers at Paisley Gilmour Street and no staff checking tickets. I think grahame has read the sign perfectly

Since the Pedant Alert is on:To a standards writer may means it is permitted so that would say Ticket barrier checks are permitted to be in operation. The appropriate word is perhaps could which is merely a statement that something is possible. Though of course without the existence of a ticket barrier this may not be true either.

Ah yes; hence this short conversation which may (sic) be overheard occasionally in the Squirrel household: Junior Squirrel: Dad, can I watch TV please? RS: You can, but you may not.

Cross Country - who to call if you can't get on line from a train ... (I'm on the Glasgow to Plymouth again): I can't get online, who can I contact? If you experience any difficulty using the WiFi system, we provide a dedicated helpdesk service. This is available by phone on 0845 287 2149 or by e-mail on service-desk@nomadrail.com (lines manned 05.00 to 02.00 each day, calls cost from 13p / minute from a BT landline. Calls from other operators and mobiles will vary and may cost more). I can imagine that many people in this situation will have their land line with themNear the end of the carriage there is a sign which says Large and heavy luggage below. Small and light luggage above Where should I place my small and heavy bag? Perhaps on the seat beside me?

Equally, where does the large and light luggage go?

From the National Rail Enquires website page for Blackhorse Road Station. How can I top-up my Oyster▸ card at the ticket machine if it doesn't have one.....? (It does in fact have three LUL▸ ticket machines, which can sell a selection of National Rail tickets)
