"The train will shortly be arriving at Maidenhead"... an announcement on the 7.48 from Paddington tonight just as we, I think, passed through Slough... Because we were running a bit late and it was quite dark outside (I am guessing we've hit the no moon at all stage) no one was sure quite where we were and all got up ready to get off.. At least everyone was ready to get off the train when we finally did arrive at Maidenhead... Roll Eyes

Well that explains a few things then.. Mind you I can usually work out when it's a full moon by other people's behaviour (but somehow didn't notice it on Monday)... Maybe the person making the announcement on my train was suffering the "full moon" after effects then  Grin

At Marble Arch station this morning (and every morning):

"Thank you for travelling with London Underground, we hope you had a pleasant journey"

If being pushed around on the escalator, having to wait for the third train because it is too busy, almost getting stuck in the doors, smelling the odour of the person I was squashed against and having my private parts rubbed by the folds of the obese person crammed in next to me, then yes, I did have a pleasant journey.

And after leaving Embankment, whilst still in a tunnel (my bold):

"The next station is Charing Cross.  Change here for the Northern Line and National Rail services.  Exit here for the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery."

I'll just jump from the moving train into the tunnel then. Roll Eyes

I forget exactly where I saw this but on a station in the north which had a footbridge at the end of the platform there was sign, right next to the footbridge, which said:

"Passengers must not cross the lines."

Also, wherever I see that sign, I think of the response, "It takes hours to untangle them."

Speed restrictions apply from when the front coach enters the beginning of a restricted section of track to when the rear coach leaves it.  As the whole of a train goes at the same speed, this means that the average speed of a long train is going to be lower than the average speed of a short train driven to the limit of the line, with equal power per coach, and ignoring factors like wind resistance.

There's at least one system around now which suggests acceleration curves / notches to drivers so that they make best use of energy and arrive at the time they're supposed to, rather than burning lots of power, arriving early and having to sit around and wait.   And watching demonstrations / replays, it's fascinating to look at the way a 4 coach train v a 12 coach train differ on the approached to and exits from a speed limited section.

Here is a very old one.

"Please do not put anything other than toilet tissue down this toilet, as it blocks the drains and often requires manual removal of offending articles by one of us!!!"

Well that makes the whole toilet completely pointless then doesn't it... Shocked

Incidentally I saw a sign like this in an Autism Centre. Autistic people are known to take things far too literally... Needless to say, the sign wasn't around for very long and was heavily modified when it reappeared... Shocked Grin Cheesy
