Cardiff railway death is "not suspicious", say police

British Transport Police said today it was treating a death on the railway line at Llanishen in Cardiff as "not suspicious".

Services on the Rhymney Valley to Penarth line were cancelled because of a fatality at Llanishen early this morning but Arriva Trains Wales reopened the line at just after 9.30am.

It warned of "severe delays" and said services were being supported by replacement buses between Cardiff and Caerphilly.

An update posted on the train operator's website said: "Owing to a person hit by a train at Llanishen all lines are blocked. Train services running through this station may be cancelled or delayed at short notice."

Replacement bus services were put in place between Caerphilly and Cardiff Central.

South Wales Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue and the British Transport Police are all on site. Officers were called to the line near Llanishen station at 8.17am today. A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line after a report that a man had been struck by a train.

"British Transport Police and South Wales Police officers attended the incident, which was reported at 8.17am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulances Service NHS Trust also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the man and inform his family. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.

The line was handed back to Network Rail at 9.12am.

Bus services are currently supplementing the train service between Caerphilly and Cardiff Central, but users have reported delays of up to an hour.

South Wales Police advised Station Road has been re-opened, but there is still congestion in the area.

A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said: "There are severe delays on the Valleys lines at the moment but we are hoping to resolve them as soon as possible."

Andrew Newman wrote on Twitter: "Traffic chaos in #Llanishen due to incident at train station. Wide area gridlocked. Please avoid."

Suzanne Evans tweeted: "So many police cars outside Llanishen train station."

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
