Just heard a feature called "Yesteryear in Parliament" on Radio 4's Sunday morning programme Broadcasting House.

It recreates debates from past years as recorded in Hansard.

Today's was the Western Rail-Road bill, which despite it sounding like it refers to a line on the other side of the Atlantic was in fact the pre-cursor to the building of the line from Paddington.

It will be available on the iPlayer for a while - it is about 20 mins in.

I wonder if HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) will be debated in the same way!

Its great to see the debate on railways has moved on (not) in nearly 200 years similar issues raised then as now most based on vested interests and not pragmatism

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

Anyone tuning into this without hearing the introduction could well have thought it was a modern debate so good was the presentation.  Fears, lack of imagination and genuine concerns about costs are nothing new.  Presumably a Victorian coffee shop might have had enthusiasts of the stage coach heatedly discussing this wondrous new development that would see their traditional industry wiped out.  Probably not as balanced as this coffee shop of course.  Roll Eyes
