How many miles?

As I am not planning to get the train today or tomorrow my mileage for the year stands at 17,998 miles (and 33 chains!).

I've reached Penzance, Pembroke Dock, Fort William, Wick and Shoreham-by-Sea but not really explored the east side of the country.  The journeys have been a mix of business and leisure - and some extended to combine both.

When I was driving I used to do between 12 and 14 thousand miles a year so the total has quite surprised me.  I thought the lack of a car might narrow my horizons but the reality is, it hasn't.  I have probably been to places I wouldn't have by road. 

Here's to more travelling in 2013 - really must get to East Anglia and Kent.

At that mileage would an all line annual season, if one exists, be cost effective?

Did you record how many delay minutes you accrued?

I do make a lot of use of 3 in 7 or 8 in 15 rovers where they are available but most long distance journeys are down on advance tickets.

Total delay 14 hours 10 minutes out of a total travelling time of 1 week, 6 days, 17 hours and 14 minutes.

If my maths are right that's around 95% of your trains were on time. which is interesting because the current moving annual average is around 91% although that's up to period 9 ending 8th December so includes first of the floods reducing period average to 85%

I think that is broadly correct.  My worst delay was 1 hour 15 mins on one leg of a trip (stuck behind a failed train at Nailsea).  A surprising number of trains arrived up to 3 mins early and I think in the overall calculation they get subtracted from the delay minutes which would bring it nearer the 91%.

My mileage stands at a rather low 2707mi 36ch.  79 hours and 47 minutes spent travelling, which equates to an average speed of 33.9mph.  This is low as most of my travelling this year was on suburban and London Underground services.  The figure also includes the FGW^▸ (First Great Western) Community Rail Festival where we were delayed by some 50 minutes.  Most of my travelling was in the London and South East, with one journey up to the West Midlands and a few visits to the West.

On the road, I've done around 6500 miles this year.  Most of that spent on the A3 and M25.

Next year, I'll be commuting about 600 miles per week by rail just to get to/from work.  That doesn't include any leisure or business mileage.

My total stands at 11,946 miles, which was higher than I expected. And that doesn't include some travelling on Eurostars - where can one find mileages for these?

Average delay 5.5 minutes.

Worst delay 102 minutes - Virgin cancelled a train and I missed not one but two connections at Birmingham New Street.

Second-worst was 80 minutes on a trip from Albertville (in the French Alps) to Lille. All of which was down to late running on the Lyon - Lille TGV^▸ (Train a Grande Vitesse), due to a broken-down train south of Lyon. And if anyone thinks that FGW^▸ (First Great Western) aren't very good at handling disruption, then all I can say is that they're better than SNCF^▸ (Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais - French National Railways). Fortunately we weren't trying to make a Eurostar connection at Lille. But we did get some compensation out of SNCF (eventually).

Least delay was 36 minutes early, on a journey from Worcester to Bedford via Leicester. East Midlands Trains ran late, so I was able to make a negative connection.

18,531 miles this year but probably a couple of hundred more tomorrow yet to come. My delay total stands at 1 day, 6 hours and 49 minutes over a travelling time of 2 weeks, 3 days, 20 hours and 25 minutes. Average speed is 43.3mph. My biggest delay this year was 1 hour 24 minutes on a Southern service from Brighton when we got caught by a points failure at Preston Park.

I don't see that as a chore.  The ever changing scenery, occasionally good company and/or good food and the chance to work so when I arrive home I have leisure time to do other things.

Perhaps if my regular journey was on the 07:44 from Henley on Thames to London Paddington I might think differently....

My 2012  mileage by rail is only around 120 miles. I have driven 40072 miles though. My first mileage of 2013 will be around 0130-0200 in the morning I think looking at my plans for tomorrow.
