Vivat Great Western!  A news report in the Daily Telegraph of horses on the line near Cambridge is illustrated by a fine example of what looks to me like a Great Western signalbox. (And the line through Milton, between Cambridge and Ely, has obviously been electrified with minimally intrusive overhead catenary!)

It is from the Scottish Daily Record, not only I am I convinced that this is not the West Coast Main Line (well not the one in England/Scotland) but the caption is also interesting (although probably true).

Well it's got me guessing definitely not WCML^▸ (West Coast Main Line), probably not Europe as only one headlight not a triangle. East Coast of States?

It's presumably Russia, on the basis that Kirill Kudryavtsev is a Russian press photographer. The BBC^» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) have used it to illustrate a story about trains in Russia, and while I don't suppose it was the right train for the story it's a much nearer miss.

British Airways Partners with Rail Companies to Offer Single Ticket Journeys


Traversing the southwest United Kingdom is about to get a whole lot easier.

According to the Telegraph's Natalie Paris, British Airways has teamed up with train companies Heathrow Express and First Great Western to offer single bookings that will combine air and rail travel, making international journeys more convenient for customers in Wales and western England.

The combined ticket for air and rail travel means that passengers who miss their flight will be provided a seat on the next available flight. And if the next available flight is on the following day, travelers will be provided overnight accommodation.

"This partnership removes a layer of hassle for customers and affords them extra protection against possible problems," said Keith Greenfield, managing director of Heathrow Express.

The tickets will be available to book through travel agents beginning on Dec. 5.

British Airways head of UK^▸ (United Kingdom)&I sales and marketing Stephen Humphreys says the combined ticket "is a great new way for our customers living in Wales and the West Country to get on track right from the start to enjoy a terrific trip with British Airways."

"Our partnership with First Great Western and Heathrow Express will make flying more accessible and convenient for customers travelling from regions in the UK without local airports," Humphreys added.

The combined tickets will apply to nearly a dozen First Great Western stations, including Oxford, Cardiff, Swansea and St. Austell.

As Humphreys points out, the new single ticket option will make international travel much easier for those in regions outside of the U.K.'s major cities. But in addition to convenience, the combined ticket will provide piece of mind for travelers.

I was tempted to give Mr Humphries a piece of my mind over his mis-spelling of 'travellers', but then I realised the piece is from a US website. I suppose we must learn to forgive them for their Neo-Websterite speling (sic) eccentricities... The fact that it's a US website may also explain the slight geographical imprecision too; from Westampton (yes, really; no 'h') NJ, the Devon Alps and the other set are probably barely distinguishable.

Here's another example, from the Bath Chronicle.

In fact, the injured woman in this incident was not hit by a train, but was rescued from near the tracks and taken to hospital in Swindon.

However, the picture used by the Bath Chronicle to illustrate their story is not on the line between Swindon and Didcot Parkway, but is ... somewhere else.

Person hit by train causing delays and cancellations on Bath Spa to London Paddington line


A person hit by a train on the London Paddington line from Bristol Temple Meads

A person has been hit by a train between Swindon and Didcot Parkway causing cancellations and delays of up to an hour.

The train in that photo is quite close to the model I would like to own someday. 2+5 rake with 3xstd. class, an RFB and one FO. Only the livery would be different. How did it manage to get short-formed by three coaches?

Likely a special (43125 is up front), an ECS^▸ (Empty Coaching Stock) move after a special, or just an ECS move getting stock where it needed to be after some chopping and changing. I've looked into the image to see if it can be dated or whether there's any accompanying info about the set the day the pic was taken, but I've drawn a blank.
