Train derailed at Inverkeilor (4 November 2012) - appeal for youths to come forward

British Transport Police (BTP^▸ (British Transport Police)) officers investigating the derailment of a train at Inverkeilor in Angus are keen to trace a group of four youths seen in the area around 7.30pm on Saturday, 3 November 2012 who may have information vital to the investigation.

They are described as ranging from 5^00^ to 5^ in height. One was wearing a grey or light coloured hooded top and trousers. No further description is available.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Miller, the officer in charge of the enquiry, said: ^The youths were seen walking towards Bryanton House just off the A92. This would have been prior to the bonfire at Inverkeilor, the night before the incident occurred. It is important to trace these youths in order to eliminate them from our enquiries.^

BTP is also appealing for anyone who attended the bonfire to come forward if they have not already done so and officers are asking for anyone who took photographs on the evening to get in touch.

The rail industry reward of ^25,000 remains on offer for anyone who provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for causing the derailment.

During the incident, which occurred around 10.00am on Sunday, 4 November 2012, the front carriage of the 08.04 CrossCountry Trains service from Edinburgh to Aberdeen came off the tracks but remained upright. None of the 36 passengers or two members of staff on-board the train at the time of the incident was seriously injured.

Train derailed in Angus after points were 'deliberately jammed open'

It has been revealed that a train was derailed in Angus after railway points were 'deliberately jammed open'.

The front wheels of the 8.04am CrossCountry train between Edinburgh and Aberdeen came off the tracks at Inverkeilor, between Arbroath and Montrose in Angus, at 9.45am on Sunday, November 4.

The incident caused travel chaos for hundreds of commuters and alternative transport services had to be put on.

None of the 36 passengers on the derailed train were injured but the 49-year-old driver was treated for a minor head injury.

A railways source has confirmed that points, which switch trains from one track to another, were jammed.

British Transport Police (BTP^▸ (British Transport Police)) said on Thursday that they were looking for four youngsters seen near the line the night before the incident.

A ^25,000 reward has been offered by the rail industry to anyone who can help police find those responsible.

From what I remember they are facing, controlled from a lever frame box which was switched out at the time.

According to my track Atlas (Version 1 - 2 has just been published) the points at Inverkeilor are both trailing for Aberdeen bound trains. XO^▸ (Crossover. Pair of points that connects two parallel rail lines. Crossovers can be either facing or trailing dependent on direction of travel) first then siding. it must have been something big that was used to jam the points as trains don't normally derail crashing trailing points.

Inverkeilor appears to an intermediate box to split the section between Abroath and Usan which  is the start off a single track section over the bridge into Montrose.

You're a wee bit out of date with your boxes eightf48544, Usan box and Montrose North are now closed, with Montrose South being brought back into commission controlling the area. Train jumped the rails with the second man side wheel scraping along the running rail of the up line until the train came to a halt. If it had jumped the other way it'd been a lot worse as it would have hit a good couple of solid bridges on it's way to a stand.

^25,000 train derailment reward still on offer

A reward of ^25,000 remains on offer for information on the deliberate derailment of an Edinburgh to Aberdeen train last year.

The front carriage of the train was derailed in Angus on Sunday November 4.

British Transport Police launched an investigation after an obstruction was found at the scene of the incident involving the 8.04am service from the Capital.

Network Rail and train operators CrossCountry, ScotRail and East Coast said a ^25,000 reward is still on offer for anyone who comes forward with information which leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Miller said: ^Despite the time that has passed since the incident occurred, I am still hopeful that someone will come forward with the piece of information that could help identify those responsible for such an irresponsible act.^
