Saturday, 15th September 2012 ... Day out at Steam in Swindon for the Swindon Rail Festival

Direct train from Westbury at 09:05, Trowbridge at 09:11 and Melksham at 09:20, returning from Swindon at 15:22 or 21:08. Rail fare - 11.30 return from Westbury or Trowbridge, 6.30 from Melksham.  Museum entrance for the special day 8.50.  Various concessions and Groupsaves available - we're checking details and will advise in due course.

Steam is the Museum of the Great Western Railway ans is always worh a visit.   For this one weekend only, twenty of the country's finest GWR (Great Western Railway) and BR (British Rail(ways)) (w) layouts are heading to the Museum for the 2012 Hornby Magazine sponsored Swindon Railway Festival.  Now in its eleventh year, the Festival brings together the country's finests layouts, demonstrators and traders.  The Museum welcomes back the impressive displays from model giants Hornby and Bachmann, and celebrity modeller and pop music legend Pete Waterman will be at the show.

See http://www.steam-museum.org.uk/steam/steam2007-swindonrailwayfestival2011.htm

For regular posters to this forum, we have a discussion running on our "Frequent Posters" board *here* where we're arranging to meet up during the day. Whether or not you're coming from West Wiltshire, whether or not you're a frequent poster, you're very welcome to join us - on the train, or (from elsewhere) at 09:50 in the foyer of Swindon Station.

Some of the group will be staying on in the late afternoon - from 15:50 at the station walking to the Sir Daniel Arms (a Wetherspoons pub) for a chinwag and meal.

* Follow ups in the thread in "Frequent Posters" please ... or send me personal messages or email
* Festival also runs on the Sunday.  But no suitable train service at present from Melksham and beyond that day.

Many thanks to BigNoseMac for the following:

Not forgetting there is a through fare/add-on available for STEAM entry. Through fares are available to the museum from most FGW (First Great Western) locations (to: NLC (National Location Code) J841 SWINDON STEAM) at a cost of ^5 on top of the rail fare. This is instead of the normal entry price of ^6.60 for adults. If a through fare is not available, a Swindon - SWINDON STEAM ticket can be purchased for ^5 when purchasing your rail ticket to Swindon.

There are no Railcard discounts on the through fare or add-on so Railcard holders would be advised to buy the add-on separately. There is however a separate add-on for Senior Citizens, whether Railcard holder or not. This is to J842 SWINDON STEAM SR (Southern Railway / Southern Region / Scot Rail / Scottish Region (rather confusing - it depends on the context)) and is priced at ^3.20

and his confirmation that these add on fares ARE valid during the Swindon Rail Festival (checked back with the commercial manager of the museum, no less!) - so they represent even more of a saving

This year (2019) - 7th and 8th September, from this is Wiltshire

Quote
The annual Swindon Railway Festival returns to Steam on Saturday September 7 and Sunday September 8.

The event will see 27 model railways all on display for the public across the whole museum.

Alongside the models, family activities, such as an interactive railway, activity trails and play areas inside the museum, will also be available.

There will also be a live steam traction engine display available at the front of the museum, which will also include the sounding of the Swindon works replica hooter (which will blow on the hour, every hour).

Unlike previous threads - multiple trains from Westbury, Trowbridge and Melksham to and from Swindon.
