Is travel allowed via Exeter St Davids if a suitable connection is not available at Newton Abbot?

Sadly not. You cannot double back unless you buy separate St Austell-Exeter St Davids and Exeter St Davids-Dawlish Warren tickets.

Thanks for that, i wasnt sure as the journey planners I have searched have offered both options for the same fare, I will play safe and use journeys that have the change at Newton Abbot.

Which journey planners? it is a bit worrying if planners are showing fare options that aren't valid...

If you can get a ticket retailer to offer that itinerary then the fare would be valid. Rail Planner Live don't sell tickets and maybe showing that fare erroneously.

However, National Rail Enquiries (which powers RPL) doesn't show the ^13.90 off Peak Day Return on the 0943 from St Austell. It makes it clear that you need two tickets for the itinerary it is offering via Exeter St Davids.

Unless you wish to pay the extra so that you can travel on the 0943 and double back from Exeter then I'd suggest catching the 0920 from St Austell instead.

If you did still want to travel out via Exeter, but return changing at Newton Abbot, an Off Peak Day Return from St Austell- Exeter would do the trick.  You'd be breaking your journey at Dawlish Warren on the return leg...........
