Is there a minimum age limit for kids in sleeping berths ?
Friends want to send a (sensible) 13 year old from London to Penzance.
The kid is mature for their age and regular travels alone, and stays at a boarding school, so nothing unusual in travel or sleeping away from home.

In the past I THOUGHT that on the FGW▸ (First Great Western) website there was something like "sleeping berths are not suitable for under 16s" or something similar, but I dont see it now.

Also, is an unacompanied 13 year old allowed in the first class lounge at Paddington, provided of course that they hold a first class ticket ?
The youngster has made numerous daytime trips, and often waited in the lounge, but on a recent visit they were refused admission. They had a full first child ticket.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

I can find nothing public that states either way about unaccompanied children on the Night Riviera. There is also nothing in 'The Manual' that covers unaccompanied children. All I could find was that they are not permitted to travel on the Caledonian Sleeper. You'll have to ask FGW▸ (First Great Western) directly about that one.

As regard the First Class Lounge at Paddington then that is solely down to staff discretion with 'right of admission reserved' I suspect. Although not allowing in someone who may well become a regular adult First Class passenger in the fullness of time is a little short sighted. A word with FGW Customer Services may be worthwhile to clarify any 'policy'. I've just asked on Facebook.

I can't find anything written down other than first advance tickets not always being a ticket to the lounges (depending on toc involved)

As I suspected, there is no policy to disallow access to the lounge for those with child 1st Class tickets. Perhaps requesting some written confirmation from fgw.facebook@fgirstgroup.com so that your friends' 13 year old isn't turned away again.

Thanks for the info.
AFAIK▸ (as far as I know) they were only turned away once, and have been admitted several times.
Now that they know the rules they can be politly insistant in future, when previously turned away they did not make a fuss in case the railway were in fact correct.
