Agewise that puts then pre-1923, right?    How much older than that, I wonder?   And would it be 32 miles from Glasgow down some route or other?

The mileage on the Caley's main line started from 0 at Carlisle. The main line ran via Motherwell, Stirling, Perth and Forfar to Aberdeen, 241 and a bit miles. The lines from Carstairs to Edinburgh Princes St, and Motherwell to Glasgow Central were given mileages that followed logically from zero at Carlisle. Other branches would have had local mileages.

On the main line, 32 would be between Lockerbie and Beattock.

There weren't many long branches. One possibility would be the Callander and Oban, where 32 would be between Crianlarich and Tyndrum Lower.
