Marley Tunnels

Since last Saturday there has been a 20mph speed restriction in the twin bore Marley Tunnels at the top of Rattery Bank in South Devon.Heard that some sort of subsidence of the overlying land has occurred hence the emergency speed restriction and that it could pose a longer term problem.When the original broad gauge single bore was built by Brunel I think it was built cut and cover as the nearby land owner did not want his view spoiled by passing trains could this be something to do with the current problem.

There was a bit of a subsidence scare on Friday, the tunnel was closed for a couple of hours on Friday afternoon while waiting for a tunnel engineer to attend and check it was safe.

The 20mph speed restriction on the down line tunnel has been lifted but remains in place on the up line tunnel.Have heard it could be a long term problem.

A spokesman for First Great Western said: "The line was closed to Eastbound services for approximately 40 mins between Plymouth and Totnes. We continued to run services east and west of those points. The line reopened at 11.10am."

Replacement bus services were supplied in the meantime.

A spokesman for Network Rail said the closure was put in place after reports of something falling from the roof of Marley Tunnel. "That's something we take very seriously. But it turned out it was what we call spalling, which is when a few flakes of concrete have come away. It has no effect on the structural integrity of the tunnel itself and we have reopened the line because it is completely safe. At some point in the near future we'll re-line the tunnel, that's routine when things start to get a bit old."
