As of this morning (26/03) the whole line between Pinhoe (exclusive) and Tisbury (exclusive) is now controlled from the West of England signalling panel at Basingstoke.  Honiton, Chard Junction, Yeovil Junction, Templecombe and Gillingham signalboxes and Sherborne Control Point all having been closed in stages over the previous few weeks. RIP Cry Cry

Surprisingly, that panel is only intended to be in use until about 2017, when Basingstoke ASC (Area Signalling Centre) is supposed to transfer into Basingstoke's new ROC (Rail Operating Centre - a centralised location for railway signalling and train control operations for a specific route or region).  Basingstoke (New) ASC has only been in use a few years itself, since about 2007 I think...

.......but before that another panel is going in to control Poole to Weymouth (taking over Dorchester panel in the process).

I suppose the idea is that you can't do the relocking of the entire Wessex area in one go in 2017, but you need a sensible flow of work for the signalling contractors.  But once a discrete area is capable of being remote controlled at a modern panel, switching to any other modern panel is just a case of re-routeing the data comms?

I do hope a sympathetic alternative use can be be found for Templecombe's box. It's an excellent example of SR (Southern Railway / Southern Region / Scot Rail / Scottish Region (rather confusing - it depends on the context))'s 'glasshouse' Type 13 signal box.
