I'm not an apple geek but I'll always use their products. My MacBook is 5 years old and iPod touch 3. Both are working fine. The OSX and iOS are also the most advance operating systems available and upgrading only cost ~^20 (unlike Windows which is hundreds).

Yes, the laptops are expensive, but you get what you pay for (along with a whole load of bundled software)!

I also have a Windows desktop at home. It was cheap, but it's hopelessly slow, and I'm sick of getting told that my computer "might be at risk".

I've seen people on trains using a couple of devices simultaneously but a woman I spotted earlier had running, and was using, 2 iPhones, an iPad and a laptop (I assume Apple). Both phones were txt, the iPad for a game and what appeared to be real work on the pc.  Shocked

A really good mate of mine is a massive Apple fan boy (despite strenuous denials on his part) so had you described this as being a man rather than a woman I'd have taken a guess that is was him Wink

I really don't get the need some iGeeks have to queue up on a cold winter night for the latest fondleslab...

That almost made me cry tears of laughter... Grin

one of the guys where  I currently work loves his gadgets (more than me) and sold his iPad 2 a couple of weeks in advance of the iPad 3 being released. WHen I asked what technical benefits the iPad 3 had over its predessor he looked puzzled for a while before replying "Its newer and better"...well,  I couldn't ask with at least one of those!

Mmmmm, interesting way this thread has gone, which I suppose looking back at my OP (Original Poster / topic starter) was going to be the way, but not the intention. What happened to the 'technology frees everyone from drudgery' sales pitch.

If you are are conducting 2 simultaneous txt conversations on phones I would suspect neither are work related, 2 separate SIM cards for other uses?

iPad was just for gaming, in breaks from txting.

In quiet moments she decided to look at the laptop.......

Shouldn't 1 device be enough for all you want to do?

ps Bluetooth isn't all it's cracked up to be......but that's another story.

Most advanced for what exactly?

I have two phones, one is for personal use, the other is a work phone which will be returned when I finish in May. I only use the work phone to make/receive calls during the working day (or if I'm working at the weekends). I don't feel the need to sit on a train, take them both out of my pockets, get my laptop out and stare blankly at them! Smiley

I didn't check whether she was wearing flat shoes.  Wink

I can't fart and chew gum at the same time. My friend tells me his son sat watching the Man Utd game on Sky Sports Monday, with another game running on his iPhone, and discussing both (and other) through Farcebook or something on a laptop. All this whilst listening to his iPod. This wasn't on a train - he doesn't get out much.

I'm very glad that when I did my train travel for work, Derby, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff were favourites you had 2 hours piece & quite to have breakfast and watch the sceanary go by. Totally out of contact with HQ (Headquarters).

The work still got done mainly because you had time to think about it and were not continualy pestered for instant answers.

Does it make people feel important that they can't be out of touch for 5 minutes?

I accept this issue of being in and out of touch is very much subjective. For my 2C, I tend to check my works email on my BB on the way into the office simply because I know that 95% of it can be addressed effectively using the "Delete" function. That means that when i get into the office I can spend time on mission critical matters such as the prior weekend and whose turn it is to make the coffee...

I had an iPhone and I loved it, until it fell out of my pocket while cycling across London a couple of weeks back and got run over by a couple of cars before I could retrieve it  Angry

I think the "being in touch" thing also depends on who you work for, my lot don't expect me to be reachable every waking hour but I know folks working for other outfitts where it is expected. Fac chance of me being contactable all the time with the lack of phone signal between Taunton and Reading!

In my previous employment as a shift manager, for a fast food restaurant, we were expected to be contactable at all hours, as we were named as key holder for the alarm company. Any alarm calls we were expected to be contactable. Think i was contacted once in 5 years.

Can't understand those who buy the same quality laptop as a Mac for half the price??
I run a MacBook Pro for music production and wouldn't trust anything else.  Windows could never be as stable nor process everything I'm doing as fast or as well as Mac OX.
I also use it for when I DJ, you don't want your tacky old Dell running Windows 7 shutting down halfway through a track!
However, I do concede that the iPhone is replaceable, having recently replaced mine with a HTC.

In conclusion - for anything serious, it HAS to be Mac....

Hey guys it's me again, I've not posted in hear for god only knows how long.... Anyway i digress. I currently own a 13" MacBook Pro and an iPhone 4S but have also considered getting an iPad a few times, I very quickly abandoned the idea one being cost and two not really knowing what I would actually use it for as I currently do everything on either my MacBook Pro or my iPhone depending on which one I have handy on me a the time.

I always have my iPhone me as that is my Primary mode of communication but have resently been carrying my laptop pretty much everywhere I go as it's usefull to have if I am going out and I come across a time where I will be sat down for extended ammounts of time, either in a coffee shop or at the Cinema when i am waiting to or the movie I want to see to start.

Depending on what i want to do I will either boot my laptop into Mac OS (Ordnance Survey) X or Windows, I don't use the windows partition much but have it there because there is one particular program I use all the time which is not yet available on Mac OS X. This program is called mIRC and is a chat client which I use to connect to an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Service which I am a moderator on.

I can moderate from the Mac OS X Client but this is harder because I cannot use the customised script I wrote which has preset Kick/Ban/Warn messages as well as other useful if formation such as the information the bots would most if a certain phrase was said like "what is monitor"

Anyway I think I have gone on for long enough so I will shut up now and try to go to sleep because as I write this it is 3:50am :/

If you just need Windows to run mIRC, have you considered using a Windows Virtual Machine? The idea is you can use a free program such as VMWare Player or VirtualBox to install, and then run, Windows as a guest VM on the OS (Ordnance Survey) X host. You would need to have the install discs for Windows in order to do this. PM if this sounds useful and you need further info.

Cheers.
