A woman was hit by a train after her mobility scooter apparently travelled into its path from a station platform.

Her injuries were said to be non life threatening following the incident at Barnsley Railway Station at around 2.30pm.

The station is currently closed and passengers are advised to check for disruptions to their rail services.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: ^Officers are working to establish the exact circumstances of the incident but it is believed that the female was on a mobility scooter on Platform one which has travelled into the path of an oncoming train.

^The female is conscious and breathing. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.^

South Yorkshire Ambulance paramedics and firefighters were also called to the scene and remained at 3.30pm.

Train hits mobility scooter woman at Barnsley station

A woman is believed to have escaped with minor injuries after her mobility scooter fell on to a railway track and was hit by a train.

The incident happened at about 14:30 GMT at Barnsley railway station in South Yorkshire.

British Transport Police said although the full extent of her injuries is not known, it is thought she escaped with minor injuries and shock.

The woman was freed by the fire service and airlifted to hospital.

Not clear why a Mobility Scooter would be on the platform at all. Northern ban all mobility scooters from their trains except those that can be folded and carried onto trains. Powered wheelchairs are, however, accepted since these will fit through train doors. Nodding Donkeys, of course, present a challenge to anyone trying to get a wheelchair on board - both getting up the ramp and finding space on board. Mostly Barnsley trains are Class 142/3/4 with Class 158 on Leeds - Barnsley - Sheffield -Nottingham semi fast services.

Woman dies after mobility scooter fall at Barnsley station

A woman whose mobility scooter fell under a train at Barnsley railway station has died in hospital.

The 73-year-old, from Monk Bretton near Barnsley, fell off the platform at 14:30 GMT on 1 February.

She was freed by the fire service and taken to hospital but died on Sunday.

Although her injuries were not life threatening, British Transport Police said her medical condition severely hampered her recovery. An inquest is being arranged.
