QR▸ codes are the two-dimensional barcodes that you can wave your mobile phone at and get taken straight to the URL in describes. They're really intended for printed pieces (you can see them on the pocket timetables for example), but I've put one on the top of the pages of this site ...
* If you have a printout of a page - or someone else has - they'll be able to get here quickly
* If someone has a mobile phone and you want to give them our URL you can just have them wave the phone in the direction of this page.
Please help me gauge how useful this is by completing the poll at the top of this page. Thanks!

I've got a mechanism which will tell me in the web server logs where someone has arrived via the QR▸ code ... I have my guesses as to how many that will be shorter and longer term, but time will tell. |

The /qr/index.html page can be forced to redirect to the homepage, so the user is none the wiser as to what has actually happened. The <body> tag can be edited like this... <body onLoad="javascript:pageTracker._setVar('qr');"> |

Erm ... could you possibly add another option to your poll, please, grahame? Something on the lines of " I haven't the faintest idea what you're on about, so I'll have to ask my teenage son to show me how it works" ...    |

I have a mobile phone, but rather surprisingly these days I use it only to make and receive telephone calls and send the odd text message. Those are the pretty much all the functions it has.
Not sure which option in the poll is best for me..... maybe the last one can be changed to "I do not have a QR▸ reading mobile device."

I agree - I had no idea what a QR▸ code is but when I saw the example I realised I had seen it before.
I have a simple mobile phone - a throw out by my daughter who has gone from a Blackberry to an I-Phone but I only use my phone when I need to make a call when I am out. I use ASDA that works on the Vodafone network and costs only 5 pence a minute to use - by far the best value for a casual user - a ^5 credit lasts me over a year! Whilst I see people in the street seemingly with a mobile glued to their ear, from what I can understand nearly all my friends, have a phone use profile similar to mine, i.e. they just use when they occasionally need to use it.

Perhaps your figures will be slightly skewed? I for one saw the QR code and immediately scanned it! QR codes are interesting, as you say, they have more of a place in printed pieces to allow you to access data quicker. FGW▸ used them on posters to allow "instant" timetable download which is a good use; it only takes a few seconds out of your time to download the timetable. I will be interested to see where QR codes get used now. (For those who don't know, they can hold much more information than a "barcode") Will they be used in stock distribution, shop products? |

Use them but not in this case. Use mobile devices (phones and tablets) instead of a computer so the qr code at the top is very limited in functionality!
