Dyfed-Powys Police say a 28-year-old man was severely beaten and thrown on to a railway line in Pembrokeshire.

The attack happened in the Ryelands Lane area near Kilgetty train station on Sunday 23 January, between 02:00-07:00 GMT.

Before the assault, the attacker was seen sitting on a bench by the town's chip shop. He spoke to the victim.

Police described the incident as "vicious". They are appealing for witnesses.

The attacker is described as white, 5ft 8in tall (1.72m), aged in his early 20s, slim build, and dark gelled flat hair. He was wearing a white top with blue jeans.

Det Chf Insp Shane Williams said: "This was a particularly vicious assault and the victim is recovering with support from police and other agencies.

"I'm also urging anyone who may have seen this person walking in the area, sat on a bench or who witnessed the assault, or heard about the incident from family or friends to contact Dyfed Powys Police."

Police say following the assault the attacker walked off in the direction of Stepaside School.

An incident room has been set up at Haverfordwest Police Station.

Dyfed-Powys Police has asked anyone with information to call 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
